euCAD SME Mentoring Support

A number of relevant SMEs in the euCAD partner countries can contact their national euCAD representative to ask how they can avail themselves of the free SME Mentoring support service (during the euCAD project time-frame). Through this mentoring support, SMEs will be given appointments during which hands-on practical experience of how the euCAD framework can be used to help them acquire CAD skills will be provided. euCAD SMEs Innovation Support

From the time people wake up in the morning, they make use of many man-made artefacts such as furniture, computers, software, phones, TVs, washing machines, houses, cars, MP3 players, trains, clocks, pens, sunglasses, toothbrushes, cookers, clothes, shoes, jewellery etc. Did you ever realize that these artefacts and many other, before they are physically produced, they have to be first conceived and designed. Someone or where appropriate, a team of people have to first create them. In addition, to compete with other similar products, adding innovative features to an artifact will give it a differentiating factor.

Indeed, companies and in particular SMEs that can be innovative by designing new solutions/products and processes can outperform their competitors. As a matter of fact, there are various studies such as that by the UK Design Council that clearly link the good design to business and economic performance – these studies clearly show the positive impact of design on practically every measure of business performance, including market share, growth, productivity, share price and competitiveness.

As argued by the EU Commission : “Innovation is now widely understood to be the driving force in economic growth. It is new products and services, and new methods for making or delivering them which add value to our economy, and enable us to improve standards of living. SMEs are responsible for much of the innovation which leads to new higher value products and services (even if ultimately larger firms may take on production and mass marketing of such innovations), and so the European Commission seeks to promote innovation to SMEs across Europe.”

Innovation and creativity are thus so important for the EU that the EU Commission dedicated 2009 as the Year of Creativity & Innovation. In line with this objective, euCAD will run a number of dissemination events in various partner countries to precisely highlight the benefits of using CAD for amplifying creativity and innovation. Of relevance to this is also euCAD’s snippet included in the April 2009 issue of EU Parliament magazine as part of the EU SME week in 2009.
